From First Call to Finished Patio: What Working With Oak Valley Looks Like

Hiring a contractor for a large outdoor project can feel like a leap. You’re inviting a crew onto your property for days or weeks and trusting them to build something that should last decades. Knowing what to expect makes the whole experience easier. Here’s how projects come together at Oak Valley Custom Hardscapes.

Who We Are

Bruce Clay and Tyler Marshall founded Oak Valley Custom Hardscapes in 2016, two lifelong industry professionals who met while working in the field. The company started with two employees and one machine, and it grew project by project across the Richmond region. Today, we run multiple crews and bring over 50 years of combined experience to every project, serving the greater Richmond and Charlottesville areas.

Starting the Conversation

Most projects begin with a quote request. From there, a member of our design team meets you on-site to look at the property, talk about how you want to use the space, and hear what you have in mind. That conversation shapes everything that follows.

Our design and sales team is led by Tim Hess, a Virginia Certified Landscape Designer and Horticulturalist with more than two decades of experience in landscape design-build. Donnie Newman focuses on pool and hardscape design, designing complete backyard projects that include pools, patios, walls, and water features.

Seeing the Plan

We provide detailed layout drawings so you can see how the space will work before construction begins. This is the time to ask questions, adjust sizes, and decide on materials, fire features, lighting, and seating. Changes are easy on paper and much harder once the base is in.

Building It Right

Tyler Marshall, our Head of Operations, oversees construction and brings over 20 years of hands-on hardscape construction experience. Our crews are known for being efficient, tidy, and professional, and our clients often mention that we pay attention to details other contractors skip.

After the Project

A finished patio isn’t the end of the relationship. Our care and maintenance program, including professional power washing, helps keep your hardscape looking its best for years.

If you’re thinking about a new patio, walkway, wall, or pool deck, we’d be glad to meet with you and start planning.
